Clear Soundproof Curtains

clear-vinyl-noise-reduction-strip-curtains

OVERVIEW

When you need both isolation from noise and visibility, AKON's clear soundproof curtains are the best choice. These clear vinyl sound barrier systems are different from regular sound barriers in the sense that they let in natural light and visibility while still absorbing noise. Our clear noise barrier solutions give you the flexibility and performance you need to control sound in homes, offices, and industrial areas.

Three proven ways to control noise without blocking your view: Strip Curtains for areas with constant foot traffic, Bulk Rolls for custom projects you want to tackle yourself, and Tailored Curtains for precise installations that move when you need them to.

Clear Strip Curtains

transparent-strip-curtains-for-soundproofing

Noise Reduction Without Barriers

Clear Strip Soundproof Curtains help cut down noise between areas while keeping things accessible. The vinyl strips are flexible enough that you can walk right through them, and they bounce back into place on their own. You get mounting brackets that work with pretty much any setup that you need. They're great if you need to regulate sound in a workshop, studio, or warehouse but don't want to put up a permanent wall. Installation is straightforward, the material holds up well over time, and they do the job without getting in your way. You still get good sound reduction while being able to move freely between spaces.

Why They Work So Well

heavy-duty-clear-vinyl-strip-curtains

Why Clear Strip Curtains Reduce Noise

Clear strip curtains don't just hang there; they make a strong, thick barrier. Heavy vinyl makes up each strip, and they fit together to make a strong, continuous wall. This is a very simple but clever way to stop sound waves from getting through.

The vinyl material itself also takes in sound. When a sound wave hits the curtain, it doesn't just bounce back; it absorbs a lot of its energy. These curtains are a great, low-tech way to keep loud noises from spreading into quieter parts of a building because they can both block and absorb sound.

Frequently Asked Questions

We've put together a list of the most common questions customers ask us about installation, durability, cost, and performance so you can make a smart choice without having to guess. This guide will help you find the best soundproof curtains, vinyl rolls, or custom options for your building, whether you're looking at them all or just a few.

What are clear soundproof curtains?

They’re transparent vinyl noise barriers. These clear soundproof curtains use dense PVC to reduce sound transmission while preserving visibility, making them ideal where monitoring equipment or workflows matters. They’re often specified by thickness (e.g., 80 mil or 120 mil) and paired with tracks or frames for easy deployment in industrial and commercial spaces.

How much noise reduction can I expect?

Expect measurable transmission loss. Typical clear PVC barriers show frequency-dependent loss with overall ratings around STC 20 (80 mil) and STC 23 (120 mil), helping cut machine, process, and ambient noise between areas while maintaining line-of-sight for safety and supervision.

How clear is the material for visibility?

Clarity is high. Clear soundproof vinyl commonly offers roughly 80–90% light transmission, so you can see people, signals, and equipment through the curtain while still gaining meaningful noise control and environmental separation across work zones.

Which thickness should I choose: 80 mil or 120 mil?

Choose based on performance needs. The 80 mil option is lighter and budget-friendly with STC ~20, while 120 mil increases mass and stiffness for STC ~23. Heavier gauges typically provide better low-frequency control and more rugged durability in high-noise, high-traffic areas.

Are clear soundproof curtains fire resistant?

Yes, models are available with recognized flame resistance. Many clear PVC noise barriers carry certifications such as California State Fire Marshal approval, supporting code-conscious installations in facilities that require documented flame performance and safety compliance.

What temperature ranges can the curtains handle?

They tolerate broad service conditions. Clear PVC barriers are commonly rated for continuous service from roughly −20°F to +160°F, with short intermittent exposures to higher temperatures, making them suitable for many indoor industrial environments and loading or process areas.

How chemical resistant is the clear vinyl?

Resistance is generally excellent to moisture, many acids, mild alkalis, oils, and greases. It is fair with some aromatics and poor with ketones, so check local exposures and cleaning agents. The material will not sag or rot, supporting long service life with basic care.

Do these curtains yellow or cloud over time?

They are designed to stay clear under normal use. Proper cleaning, avoiding harsh ketone-based solvents, and minimizing abrasive contact preserve transparency. For UV-intense or abrasive settings, consider protective policies and maintenance schedules to extend optical clarity.

How do clear soundproof curtains compare to quilted acoustic panels?

They prioritize visibility over absorption. Clear PVC acts mainly as a noise barrier, maintaining line-of-sight, while quilted fiberglass panels add absorption and barrier layers but aren’t transparent. Some facilities combine both—clear barriers for sight lines and quilted panels for extra absorption.

Can I use clear soundproof curtains on sliding tracks or retractable systems?

Yes, they integrate well with track and roller systems. Heavier gauges like 120 mil glide smoothly on quality hardware and seal more effectively at overlaps. Retractable options let you open bays fully when needed and redeploy barriers quickly during noisy operations.

How are the curtains installed?

Installation is straightforward with proper hardware. Most systems hang from ceiling-mounted tracks or tubular frames, using fasteners, grommets, or keder edges. Professional install improves fit and sealing, but DIY is feasible for simple runs with basic tools and accurate measurements.

What sizes or roll formats are available?

Roll goods are common for custom builds. Typical clear sound barrier rolls are 48 inches wide, with length varying by thickness—lighter gauges often in longer rolls than heavier ones. Fabricators can heat-seal, edge-bind, or add attachments to create custom panels and enclosures.

Are there standard part numbers I should know?

Yes—suppliers use specific SKUs. For example, 80 mil clear PVC barriers and 120 mil clear PVC barriers are commonly distinguished by separate part numbers, helping spec and reorder accuracy. Refer to your quotation or data sheet to match thickness and performance.

Do clear soundproof curtains block dust or drafts in addition to noise?

Yes, they create a flexible partition. The continuous vinyl barrier reduces cross-contamination of dust and helps limit drafts, fumes, and temperature migration between zones, improving environmental control around equipment, aisles, and loading areas while maintaining visibility.

Can I combine clear panels with opaque or quilted sections?

Absolutely. Many facilities mix clear PVC windows with opaque or quilted acoustic sections to balance sight lines with better absorption and barrier mass. Modular designs let you fine-tune overlap seals, access points, and viewing panels for each process area.

How should I clean and maintain clear soundproof curtains?

Clean gently with non-abrasive methods. Use mild soap and water, avoid ketone-based solvents, and wipe with soft cloths to preserve clarity. Inspect hardware, overlaps, and seals periodically; timely repairs and proper storage extend service life and acoustic performance.

Are clear soundproof curtains suitable for food or healthcare areas?

Often, yes—check your standards. The smooth PVC surface is easy to wipe down and visually monitor, which helps in hygienic zones. Confirm local codes, flame requirements, and chemical compatibility, and specify hardware that supports frequent cleaning and inspections.

What sealing methods improve acoustic performance?

Focus on mass and airtightness. Use overlaps, floor sweeps, side seals, and well-fitted tracks to reduce flanking paths. Heavier gauges raise sound transmission loss, while careful perimeter sealing maximizes real-world performance around doors, gaps, and penetrations.

Do I need professional installation to meet targets?

Not always, but it helps. Simple bays can be DIY, yet professional installers ensure square runs, proper hang heights, and tight seals—critical for achieving the expected STC performance and durability, especially with long spans or complex layouts.

How do I choose between budget and premium options?

Match specs to your noise and workflow. If visibility and access are paramount with moderate noise, 80 mil can be cost-effective. For higher noise or rugged use, 120 mil and better sealing deliver stronger control. Consider lifecycle cost, not just material price.

Audio Examples

Examples of Sound Blocking

When trying to reduce equipment noise, most people simply say they want it “quieter” without knowing how much reduction theyactually need. These audio clips demonstrate what different decibel reductions actually sound like using real machine noise — so you can hear the difference, not just read about it.

🔊 Machine Noise (Original)
This is the unaltered recording of the machine at full volume. It serves as the reference sound to compare against the reduced versions.

https://www.curtain-and-divider.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Normal-Volume-Short.mp3

🔉 3 dB Reduction
Slight Change. A 3 dB drop reduces the perceived volume by about 18%. This change is minimal and only slightly noticeable to the average ear.

https://www.curtain-and-divider.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/3db-reduction-short.mp3

🔉 6 dB Reduction
Clearly Noticeable. Reducing the noise by 6 dB results in roughly a 34% decrease in perceived loudness. Most people can easily hear the difference at this level.

https://www.curtain-and-divider.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/6db-reduction-short.mp3

🔉 10 dB Reduction
Sounds Half as Loud. A 10 dB reduction cuts the perceived sound by 50%. This is a significant drop that makes the machine sound much quieter.

https://www.curtain-and-divider.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/10db-reduction-short.mp3

🔉 20 dB Reduction
Major Difference. With a 75% decrease in perceived volume, this level of reduction delivers a dramatic change and makes the machine sound far less intrusive.

Floor Sweeps

A floor sweep seals the open area between the
curtain and the floor. It attaches to the main
curtain by Velcro. They are 6″ tall and as wide
as the entire length of the curtain. These are
ideal for controlling dust, fumes, odors and
other undesirable elements. They can also be
replaced in the future should the friction from
the floor wear them out.

Anchor Straps

Velcro straps hold your curtain in place if wind
is present or a more secure curtain is required.
These anchors feature Velcro straps which loop
through a D-ring which is anchored into the
cement floor. Typically spaced every 4'.

Seal Velcro

Seal Velcro also known as adhesive Velcro sticks
onto your curtain and can be installed in the field.
Please note that this is not ideal for cold
temperature applications or high-frequency use.

How to Measure

Width

  • Measure the distance that you are trying to cover and then add 5% to that dimension and enter it into the width box.
  • TIP - The reason you want to add 5% is for proper drape of the curtain so it properly covers the span.

Height

  • Measure the distance from the floor to the above mounting point (from where you would attach the curtain track) and subtract 3 inches, and then input it into the height box.
  • TIP - If you are not using any hardware, then you don't need to subtract the 3"
  • TIP - If you want to engage the floor then select the floor sweep option on this form.

Common Questions

What is the spacing from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain?
  • Standard curtains have approximately 3.75 to 1″ of a gap from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain.
Spacing from Track

What are the dimensions of the track?

Can the track be cut to size as required on site?
  • Yes, the track is made to be field cut on site using a hack saw or sawzall.
How much width does the radius corner add to the length?
  • A radius corner has a 2' radius. So if you input 10' for curtain length you will end up with 12' when you attach the radius corner. If that is too long then simply cut the track onsite and the radius will still work.
How does the track go together?
  • The track is modular in design and will arrive in pieces that have a simple bolt together design.
How close together do I need the track supports?
  • The track should be supported approximately every 5' with a track support. The farther apart the track supports, the greater the deflection. If you have a relatively light weight curtain then you could space the supports out to about 8' apart. You will receive enough track supports with your order to achieve this 5' spacing.
Can I simply drill straight through the track and into the ceiling / structure?
  • Yes. This is called a flush mount install and is very common. Simply drill through the middle of the track and use a small wood screw, bolt, Tek screw...ect into your structure. Space the holes about every 3-5'.
How hard is it to install the industrial curtain track?
  • It is very easy. All of the components simply fit into each other and connect with set screws. The installation is very intuitive. If you have any difficulty simply call or email us and we will walk you through the process.
Will the track rust? Can it be used in wet environments?
  • The track is Hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) which is often used to protect steel from corrosion in some of the harshest environments imaginable, yet it provides maintenance-free longevity for decades. The corrosion resistance of hot-dip galvanizing varies according to its surroundings but generally corrodes at a rate of 1/30 of bare steel in the same environment.

Testimonials

"AKON had the quality that was lacking with our previous industrial curtain supplier. We run a fortune 500 company that relies on zero downtime. The AKON industrial curtain system just lasts longer and is made of better materials. I informed purchasing that if its not from AKON, then we don't want it!" - Fred Dixon

"The AKON wash bay curtains look great! No one was as helpful or as knowledgeable as your staff and that was a big deciding factor for us. When the wash bay curtains arrived the installation was flawless. We now have a wash bay curtain that we can be proud of and that will last for many years." - Jackie McGarb

"THE BEST!!! Hands Down!!. The curtains have stronger grommets and the vinyl is the best quality that we have seen. The service is also top notch and we have answers to our questions instantly. You can tell this is a well run company and they have taken care of all the projects that we have thrown at them." - Mike Richards
