How To Winterize A Patio

how to winterize your patio for the cold winters

#1 - Clear Winter Wind Blocker Tarps

winterize patio enclosures for cold weather and snow

Today's article will focus about how to winterize a patio as even if you are on a tight budget. After all, the winter months bring many challenges such as cold temperatures, snowfall, strong winds, flying debris, and more. To overcome these challenges, you can design a custom and unique curtain tarp.

The first type are the wind-blocker tarps. These are great for the winter, but can be used all-year-round. What makes them special is how durable we have designed them to be. The clear version comes with wind webbing on the edges to keep the grommets from ripping out. The result is clear - these are our most durable tarps against strong winds and by far the most popular winterize panels for patios that we sell.

Wind blocker curtains are most commonly used in every state in America and even Canada. We can also use additional pockets for the tarp to be tied down in case a super strong storm approaches. The tarp walls are custom-designed for your patio windows, doors and open sides. They will fit perfectly and leave no spot open.

Winterize Patio Doors

Screen Door Cover Clear VInyl

Patio screen door winterizing is often required for patios, screen porches, and other structures that have a screen door. We custom make these so that they have an exact fit on your screen door. The screen door winter cover is clear so that it lets light into your enclosure. The cover can be provided with snaps or grommets of your choosing based on the material your door is made of. The patio screen door cover keeps out wind, rain and snow making it a great complement to the other enclosure covers that we provide. When the season is over, simply un-attach it from the door and store it for next season. If you have a doggie door, we can also accommodate that by leaving a small clear flap that drapes over it.

  • Custom-made just for your screen door
  • Snap on or stick on fasteners for quick easy install
  • Visually appealing unlike other solutions
  • Clear material lets the light in

#2 - Insulated Patio Enclosures

how to enclose a porch with windows

Insulated porch enclosure curtains come in many sizes and custom shapes. Depending on your needs, these outdoor insulated porch curtains cover your patio so that you can use it in the winter. The insulated porch panels are made to your exact sizes so that they fit perfectly. After you are done using them for the season, they can be taken down and stored for the next season. Unlike rigid insulated panels, they are less expensive, easier to store, quicker to produce and faster to install. They come in two mounting styles, curtain track and static mount.

Curtain track allows the insulated thermal patio enclosure curtains to fold up to the side. There are five different mounting styles that you can choose from to attach to your structure. The tracks can be mounted to the ceiling, wall face, or can even be suspended from above using threaded rod or chain. If choosing the curtain track style then there will be a small gap from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain. To cover that gap AKON can supply a small 6" tall valance to drape over that gap for further temperature control.

If using the static mount style then you can attach the insulated thermal patio enclosure tarps directly to your structure. We place grommets every 18 inches so that you can use a fastener of your choice to mount the panels in a fixed position. Once the season is over, just like the curtain track option, you can take the insulated panels down and store them for the next season. If you need help choosing fasteners then this is a helpful guide.

#3 - Tarps With Clear Windows

winterize patio with window cover panels

Winterizing your patio can also be accomplished using Tarps With Clear Windows. The vision panels that we add serve as clear panels to allow light inside. The opaque portion of the panel blocks the light and is also very strong as it is reinforced with polyester mesh. This type of winterization also gives you some privacy while allowing you to choose colors for the top and bottom.

The heavy-duty vinyl we use will persist in storms, winds, and harsh weather conditions. The clear window tarps are also suitable for long exposures to direct sunlight and high heat waves as they are UV rated. They feature grommets, pockets, and even zipper splits for quick access.

So how to enclose a patio for winter is just as easy with these panels in three easy steps. First, measure your patio or porch area. Second, design a tarp enclosure by clicking on the yellow button below. Third, place your order, and we will process it and ship it. Winterize patio enclosures from AKON are made to order just for you.

#4 - Retractable Enclosures

awning winter side panels clear

AKON's retractable tarp enclosures are perfect for ice-cold winters. They come with custom sizes, layouts, colors, vision panels, and many useful accessories to choose from. After the winter is over, simply pull them back and tie them off to the wall or post. Or you can easily take them off the roller hooks and store them for the next season. They are around 1/3rd the price of common rigid patio panels, yet the tarps are just as strong while being much easier to install and removable as well.

Choose from 5 different track attachments to match the structure that you are trying to attach to. You can mount to the underside of your structure, the face, or even drop down with cables to hold the track.

If you want insulated curtains, you can choose from 2 different R-Values depending on your application. R-Value is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power. The most common R-Value is R3 for patios which is easier to handle as its less bulky. R6 is more potent and useful for super cold winters. We also have inner batting for additional insulation power.

How To Weatherproof A Screened Porch

The winter is upon us. A mere few weeks from now, the heavy snow should start falling, and now is the time to prepare. If you are wondering how to weatherproof a screened porch, our blog explains it in detail.

In the above paragraphs you saw the different products we use. Here, we will explain what dangers threaten the everyday porch during the winter and describe why our tarps are the best.

Moisture Resistance

If your walls have leaks, it's like you're don't have any. The winter can be harsh, and we understand that very well. All outdoor tarps have strong moisture resistance. You can rest assured, your patio or porch areas will remain in amazing condition at all times.

The Cold Months Will No Longer Pose A Threat

Material Sample 2

What Are The Most Common Threats?

  • Snow. Our tarps have two distinct advantages here. Not only do they prevent snow from entering inside the porch area, but their slick surface makes sure there is no snow build up either. The snow will fall on the ground instead of remaining above
  • UV rays. While not the biggest threat during winters, UV light does poserisks for your furniture by causing small cracks or vanishing colors
  • Dust or dirt. Especially true for early springs when all the snow melts. There is too much dirt in some areas, and the curtains will block it off
  • Pollen or leaves. The months before Christmas are well-known for all the flying leafs. As beautiful as they are, once they land on your porch, they start piling up. With proper curtains, they will never get inside
  • Pests. And especially insects. They usually find a way in, but not anymore. The tarps we sell come with strong seals that prevent pests from entering
  • Rain and ice. The winter months are dangerous for our patio furniture and for ourselves. Thanks to the tarps we use, no rain will ever enter. Not only will the indoor atmosphere remain nice and warm, but you will prevent mold and mildew buildup. They tend to appear in indoor porch corners during the winters, but no more!

What Accessories And Optional Features Do We Use

zippers, sweeps, and chains for curtains

Optional Features:

  • Floor sweeps. Our floor sweeps anchor to the curtain and hang about 6'' below. They engage the floor for a better separation of environments and also improves temperatures. Only used on curtain track curtains.
  • Chain weights. They make the curtain heavier by being positioned at the bottom. The 3/16'' opening makes your patio tarp tougher against drafts and mild winds.
  • Anchor straps. They are positioned about 4' apart and use a Velcro strap loop through the rings for extra durability.
zipper access on pavilion enclosure tarp

Made For Ease-Of-Access

You can customize your new winter tarp to use zipper splits. You choose the position of the zipper. While most commonly used for static-mounted tarps and curtains, most of our products can use zipper entrances.

The zipper splits shall not cause temperature loss. The opposite is true - they are designed for quick access without letting the warm air out by leaving a large opening.

reinforced pavilion enclosure tarps

Reinforced And Durable Edges

All our patio and porch curtains use reinforced edges like these op the picture to the left. The edge webbing is originally made for industrial use, and will withstand high pressure against winds, raid, snow, and flying debris.

As a result, the grommets shall not pull out of the PVC in windy conditions. This feature is optional, and you can decide whether to include it or not. It is advisable for areas with strong seasonal winds.

custom shapes

Custom Shapes

The beauty of our curtains is how you can choose the sizes and shapes for a perfect fit. We rarely sell two identical curtains. Every customer has unique requirements, and we are here to complete them all.

Usually we have five traditional layouts: single, double, triple, quadruple, and multi-straight. However, we accept requests with any shape you might need. If you wonder how to close in a screened porch, this is the easy solution.

tough material

Extreme Durability

Depending on the curtain type and application, we offer a few material options. The one we use for winter patios and porches is the AKON 18oz reinforced vinyl. This same material is used on trucking tarps and has insane durability.

Unlike unsightly cheap crinkly tarps, our 18oz industrial-strength vinyl is originally made for heavy-duty use and shall last for years to come.
